Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) is one of the most competitive and sought-after courses at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). 

Many science students dream of studying MLS at UNN because of its reputation and the job opportunities that come with it. However, getting into the program is not easy. 

You need a high JAMB score, strong O’Level results, and a good post-UTME performance. 

What is the general JAMB cut-off mark for UNN?

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, accepts a general JAMB UTME cut-off mark of 160. 

This means anyone who scores 160 or more in JAMB can apply for Post-UTME.

But this 160 mark only qualifies you to take the post-UTME exam, it does not guarantee admission. 

For courses that are less competitive like Agricultural Science or some Arts programs, 160 might be enough. 

But for competitive courses like Medical Laboratory Science, Nursing, Medicine, and Pharmacy, the real required score is much higher.

What is the JAMB cut-off mark for Medical Laboratory Science at UNN?

For Medical Laboratory Science, you need much more than 160. 

Although UNN does not publish departmental cut-offs in advance, data from past years show that the JAMB score needed to stand a chance for MLS is usually between 250 and 270.

  • In 2022/2023, the cut-off for Medical Laboratory Science was around 256

  • In 2023/2024, some candidates gained admission with scores above 260

  • For 2024/2025, most admission platforms project the MLS cut-off to stay within 250–270

So if you scored 160 or even 200, you will not be considered for MLS. You need to be in the top range to make it.

How does UNN calculate its departmental cut-off?

UNN uses a system that combines your JAMB score and your Post-UTME score. The calculation works like this:

  • Your JAMB score is divided by 8

  • Your Post-UTME score is divided by 2

  • Then both results are added together to get your aggregate score

Let’s say you scored 256 in JAMB and 74 in Post-UTME:

  • 256 ÷ 8 = 32

  • 74 ÷ 2 = 37

  • Aggregate = 32 + 37 = 69

This aggregate score is what UNN uses to determine if you meet the cut-off for your course.

For Medical Laboratory Science, you typically need an aggregate of 65–70 or above, depending on how competitive the year is.

Why is the cut-off for Medical Laboratory Science so high in UNN?

There are two main reasons:

  1. Limited slots: The Faculty of Health Sciences in UNN has limited space for students in MLS. They cannot admit thousands of people because of resource limits like lecture halls, laboratories, and staff.

  2. High demand: Medical Laboratory Science is a professional course with good career prospects. Many students apply for it every year, so the university raises the score to choose only the best.

This is the same reason courses like Medicine and Nursing also have high cut-offs. It’s about space and competition.

What O’Level subjects do I need for MLS in UNN?

To qualify for Medical Laboratory Science in UNN, you must have five credit passes in the following subjects:

  • English Language

  • Mathematics

  • Physics

  • Chemistry

  • Biology

These must be from WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB, and must be obtained in not more than two sittings.

You cannot be admitted without these subjects, even if your JAMB score is high.

Can I gain admission into MLS with 200 or 220 in JAMB?

No. If you scored 200 or 220 in JAMB, it is very unlikely that you will be admitted into Medical Laboratory Science at UNN. 

Past records show that only students with 250 and above stand a real chance. 

While you may still write the Post-UTME, your final aggregate will likely fall below the department’s minimum. 

You should either consider a less competitive course or plan to write JAMB again and aim higher.

Does UNN accept Direct Entry (DE) into Medical Laboratory Science?

Yes, UNN accepts Direct Entry candidates into Medical Laboratory Science, but the requirements are also competitive. 

To be considered for DE admission, you need one of the following:

  • A-level passes in at least Biology and Chemistry

  • A National Diploma (ND) or Higher National Diploma (HND) in a related course like Science Laboratory Technology with at least Upper Credit

  • JUPEB or IJMB certificates with good results in the required subjects

You must also meet the same O’Level subject requirements listed above. However, gaining admission through Direct Entry is not easy. 

The number of DE slots is small, and the competition is still high.
