UNIPORT Post UTME cut off mark for Nursing Admission

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) is one of the top federal universities in Nigeria, known for its competitive academic standards, especially in the health sciences. 

Nursing Science at UNIPORT is one of the most sought-after courses due to the university’s reputable College of Health Sciences and the career opportunities available for graduates. 

As such, the cut-off mark for Nursing is higher than most other courses.

What is the minimum UTME score required for Nursing at UNIPORT?

To be eligible to apply for the Post-UTME screening at UNIPORT, candidates must have scored at least 160 in their JAMB UTME. 

However, this is only the general university cut-off and not sufficient for Nursing Science. 

For competitive courses like Nursing, a UTME score of 200 and above is strongly recommended. 

Most students who gain admission into Nursing usually score between 230 and 270 in JAMB. 

If you score lower than 200, it’s unlikely you’ll make it to the Post-UTME shortlist for Nursing, even if you meet the 160 minimum requirement for general screening.

How is the UNIPORT admission aggregate calculated?

UNIPORT uses a weighted average system to determine a student’s aggregate admission score.

The formula is straightforward:

• UTME score is divided by 8

• Post-UTME score is divided by 2

• The two results are added together to form the final aggregate

For example, if you scored 240 in UTME and 72 in Post-UTME:

• UTME: 240 ÷ 8 = 30

• Post-UTME: 72 ÷ 2 = 36

• Final Aggregate = 30 + 36 = 66
  

The higher your aggregate score, the better your chances, especially for limited courses like Nursing.

What is the expected cut-off aggregate for Nursing Science?

UNIPORT does not publish official departmental cut-off marks publicly, but over the years, based on results from admitted students, the typical aggregate score for Nursing ranges from 64 to 75. 

This translates to a UTME score of 230–260 combined with a Post-UTME score of 70–80. 

Anything less than this may not be competitive enough, especially as Nursing has very few available slots and high application numbers.

How high should my Post-UTME score be to get Nursing?

The Post-UTME screening at UNIPORT is scored over 100, and you should aim to score at least 70 or above if you want to be seriously considered for Nursing. 

Even if you had a very strong JAMB score, a low Post-UTME score can drag down your aggregate and push you out of the Nursing cut. 

Ideally, candidates should prepare thoroughly using past questions and study guides specific to the UNIPORT screening format.

What if I score below the Nursing cut-off?

If your aggregate falls below 64, even after scoring above 200 in UTME, you may not be considered for Nursing. 

In such cases, the university may offer you admission into related courses like Physiology, Anatomy, or Biological Sciences, depending on your subject combination and the availability of spaces. 

Alternatively, you could wait for the supplementary admission lists, where cut-offs are sometimes lowered for courses with remaining vacancies, though this rarely happens for Nursing.

Can I apply for Nursing through a supplementary or change of course?

Unfortunately, Nursing Science at UNIPORT is not usually available for supplementary admission. 

The demand is too high, and available slots are quickly filled during the first batch of admissions. 

Candidates are advised to select Nursing as their first-choice course from the beginning and meet all requirements upfront. 

Changing into Nursing later is nearly impossible due to the competitive nature and strict capacity limits of the College of Health Sciences.

What should I do now to increase my chances?

If you’re serious about studying Nursing at UNIPORT, you should start preparing early for both the UTME and the Post-UTME. 

Aim for a JAMB score of 230 or more, and practice extensively for the Post-UTME to hit a score of 70+.
