Medical Laboratory Science is one of the most competitive health courses offered at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE).

FUOYE usually sets its general JAMB UTME cut-off mark between 150 and 160, depending on the course.
This means if you score 150 or more in JAMB and choose FUOYE as your first choice, you are eligible to apply for the post-UTME screening. However, this is just the minimum.
Popular courses like Medicine, Nursing, and Medical Laboratory Science require higher scores.
So while 150 may get you into some courses, it won’t be enough for highly competitive ones.
What is the specific cut-off mark for Medical Laboratory Science in FUOYE?
For the 2024/2025 academic session, FUOYE has set the cut-off mark for Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) at 200.
This is the minimum JAMB score required for you to be considered for the course.
If you score anything below 200, even 199, you will not be invited for post-UTME screening for MLS.
This score has stayed consistent for the past few years and is unlikely to be lowered due to the number of people applying.
Why is the cut-off mark for MLS higher than other courses?
The reason is simple: competition and limited slots. Medical Laboratory Science is a health-related course under FUOYE’s Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences.
Every year, a large number of students apply for it, but the department cannot admit everyone.
The university raises the cut-off to reduce the number of eligible candidates and ensure only the best are selected.
This also helps the department manage class size and available facilities like labs and teaching staff.
Is it possible to gain admission with 195 in JAMB?
No. If you scored 195, you cannot be considered for Medical Laboratory Science at FUOYE.
Even though you are above the general 150 cut-off, you are below the departmental requirement for MLS. FUOYE does not consider “near misses.”
If you do not meet the 200 cut-off, your application will not be processed for that course.
You can either apply for a different course with a lower cut-off or retake JAMB next year and aim higher.
What are the O’Level requirements for Medical Laboratory Science at FUOYE?
To apply for MLS at FUOYE, you must have five credit passes in the following subjects:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
These must all be from WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB, and obtained in not more than two sittings.
Without these subjects, even if you score 300 in JAMB, you will not be admitted.
The university checks both JAMB and O’Level results before offering admission.
How does FUOYE calculate the departmental cut-off for MLS?
After JAMB, FUOYE conducts a Post-UTME screening. Your JAMB score and post-UTME performance are combined to give you an aggregate score.
For Medical Laboratory Science, candidates usually need an aggregate score of about 70 or above to stand a good chance.
Here’s an idea of how the aggregate is calculated:
- JAMB score is divided by 8
- Post-UTME score is divided by 2
- Both are added together
So, if you scored 240 in JAMB and 70 in Post-UTME:
- 240 ÷ 8 = 30
- 70 ÷ 2 = 35
- Aggregate = 30 + 35 = 65
In this case, 65 may not be enough for MLS. That’s why both JAMB and Post-UTME scores matter.
Does FUOYE accept Direct Entry for Medical Laboratory Science?
Yes, FUOYE accepts Direct Entry (DE) candidates into Medical Laboratory Science. However, you must meet certain requirements, such as:
- At least Upper Credit in ND or HND (preferably in Science Laboratory Technology or related field)
- A-level passes in Biology and Chemistry (for those using JUPEB or IJMB)
- Required O’Level subjects as mentioned earlier
Admission through Direct Entry is also very competitive, so even with these qualifications, you’ll still need a strong academic background.
What should I do if I don’t meet the MLS cut-off?
If your JAMB score is below 200, you have a few options:
- Apply for another course in FUOYE that accepts your score (e.g., Biology, Microbiology, or Anatomy)
- Wait for the university’s change of course portal to open, you might be given another option based on your score
- Prepare and write JAMB again, aiming for 200+
- Consider studying in a private university, if financially possible
- Try Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) in a polytechnic and later switch via Direct Entry
